Although the time he arrived was close to what Mirai Bulma told Trunks, so I suppose Freeza might've just been spending that time searching for the Zet-Senshi in the Mirai timeline before Goku returned.

Nah, I don't think that's it. He did it in the future timeline, so I see no reason why he should be afraid to use it in this timeline. Just because he used it in the alternate timeline, does not mean he wanted to. In my opinion, he was forced to. I was simply questioning his confidence, not his ability.

In Trunks' timeline he had no other choice, it was either doing the IT or letting all his friends and everyone else on Earth get killed. Doesn't mean he was perfectly confident in his technique to use it from that distance. In the current timeline he sensed that some big ki defeated Freeza and his father, so he didn't see the need to risk using the IT.
